The flash floods in Pakistan last year were the country’s deadliest floods in decades, destroying villages, roads, bridges and crops along the way. 1600 lives were lost, and 20 million lives have been displaced thus far. To make things worse, aid for survivors of this recent natural disaster has been painfully slow.
Championing SARA is planning to send 10,000 birthing kits to be distributed to visibly pregnant women, trained birth attendants and midwives. Each birthing kits contains a pair of medical rubber gloves, a pair of plastic sheets, soap, strings, gauze, a pictorial birthing manual and an umbilical cord clamp. These birthing kits ensure a clean, safe birthing environment for women and babies.
Two of Championing SARA’s local Pakistan partners with the capacity and trust of the communities will be doing the distribution. Apart from the birthing kits, the foundation is also planning to send condoms and other Sexual and Reproductive Health medicines and items such as emergency contraceptive pills as a life saving intervention for rape victims.
Despite many media efforts, Championing SARA is still in need of funds. Below are the items/expenses still in need:Warehouse fees (until 9th April)
– 10 thousand metres of cotton strings at RM0.30 p/metre (for birthing kits)
– 10 thousand umbilical cord clamps at RM0.20each (for birthing kits)
– 10 thousand pieces of medicated soap at RM 0.46 each (for birthing kits)
– 10 thousand pairs of pre-cut gauze at RM 0.23 per pair (for birthing kits)
For accountability and transparency, Championing SARA’s accounts are being incubated and audited by an established NGO Empower Malaysia.
The foundation is seeking a cash sponsorship of RM2000 from the public to help contribute to the expenses above. At the end of this project, a community based event will be organised to pack the birthing kits. Packing date and venue are to be confirmed once all items have been secured.

About Championing SARA
Championing SARA is a group that champions and advocates for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) awareness, specifically in post-disaster and conflict situations. It was founded based on one humanitarian volunteer’s experience speaking to 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and 2006 Central Java Earthquake survivors.
SRH problems are the leading cause of women’s ill health and death worldwide, and in emergency settings and forced population migration, the percentage rises by an alarmingly higher rate. No clean underwear and sanitary pads, access to family planning care and rights are obstructed, needs of pregnant women are neglected, higher risks of HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Infections spread, increase of sexual violence, illegal and unsafe abortions take place, and many more.
