Home Food ReviewsCuisineAsian Sunny Seafood Restaurant, Shah Alam

If there was one thing I’m hopeless at, it’s my sense of direction. “There’s this place that serves really good butter crabs near Shah Alam”, said Joshua. He tried giving me directions, and lost me at Bandar Utama toll booth. I asked him to take me there instead.Sunny Seafood Restaurant is a family-run restaurant that has been around for quite some time, and according to Joshua the food used to be a lot cheaper. The journey was long – good thing I wasn’t the one driving! We called ahead and ordered 4kg of crabs, cooked claypot butter milk style. Like Joshua said, the crabs were REALLY good stuff. The thick gravy formed a layer of coating on the crabs – “lemak”, spicy and fragrant. Incredibly addictive with their deep fried mantau bread. The crabs were big, fresh and meaty; don’t you just hate it when you get hollow ones?!I also enjoyed the lotus roots with salted egg yolk. The lotus roots were thinly sliced, fried till crispy perfection, and coated with the rich yolk. A small portion wasn’t enough, so we ordered another one. The second one however, wasn’t as crispy.Fried tang hoon had wok hei and it wasn’t overly oily. I liked how generous they were with the ingredients – if only there was sambal belacan to go with the noodles. I didn’t care much for the fried mee hoon. It tasted bland compared to the tang hoon.Pumpkin chicken was another favourite that night. I don’t think I’ve eaten chicken done this way before. The chicken pieces were crispy, moist and deliciously flavoured by the creamy pumpkin gravy. It was mildly spicy from the chilli padi, but still suitable for those who can’t take spicy food.Kangkung belacan is a standard dish at tai chows, or any restaurant for that matter. Sunny’s version was garlicky and spicy with generous lashings of belacan. Kam Heong Mantis Prawn was disappointing. The gravy tasted a bit burnt, and the prawns were soggy. I suggest you skip this.

The last of the butter milk crabs!

We washed down the food with their homemade soya bean. Unlike a lot of commercially available ones, this one was not overly sweet and had a smooth finish. Dinner came up to RM197 for the 8 of us. For the amount we ordered, I found it quite reasonable.

I went home that night, pestering rif to take me there again. Because I still don’t know how to get there!
Ambiance: 6.5/10
Price: 6.5/10
Food: 7/10 (non-halal)
Verdict: I MUST HAVE THOSE BUTTER MILK CRABS AGAIN! And the pumpkin chicken…and the salted egg yolk lotus roots…

If you have a good sense of direction or know you way around Shah Alam, you should be able to find the place easily. For those who are not as direction savvy (like myself), call them in case you get lost!

CS – If you didn't already notice, I do include GPS coordinates in my reviews.

So happened my GPS wasn't working that day, so I didn't include it inside the review.

KY – Go try! =)

i don't think i've ever had chicken coated with pumpkin either, but i love pumpkin, so i bet i'd like it. i've never had lotus roots with salted egg yolk either. but y'know, lotus root coated with salted egg yolk AND pumpkin might actually make a great threesome :D

Oh my those crabs look heavenly! I've had creamy buttery crabs before at King Crab and I thought they were fabulous too! Judging from the look, I think the one at King Crab is more creamy and thicker in texture. But either way, I love crabs with creamy sauce!

leo – Take me instead! *so tak malu* =P

iamthewitch – I personally like this one compared to King Crab. King Crab's gravy a bit inconsistent. And they are quite kiam siap with the sauce. LOL

Sean – Hahahaha…probably! I should make a special order for that next time. ;)

Ju Ann – Hey, yes I do! The crabs were awesomeeeee!!! =D

ahha! just went there yesterday night to celebrate my mom's post birthday dinner!!

i think it is too many people that nite (luckily i made a reservation before hand)… so the food there is ok only… the lotus root is nice but not crispy enough… and yes the pumpkin chicken is nice~~ =)

i did try the butter milk gravy… it is very fragrant indeed…

and yes the price is reasonable too~~ =)
