This week has been crazy. I had to rush all my work before pageant week, finish my articles due at the same time because of bad planning (not on my part) and pack all the necessary items for the Miss Universe Malaysia 2010 pageant.
Anyway, Cava at Jalan Bangkung recently had a relaunch, and they also introduced new dishes on the menu. I was one of the lucky few who got to check the place and food out. Thank you Fadlin, for the invite!Among the dishes I tried, the mushroom oyster and queso salmon roulade stood out. Baked with mushroom Aioli and wasabi caviar, the fresh oysters tasted of the sea. The wasabi caviar was very subtle, but it brought out the natural flavours of the oysters. I also couldn’t get enough of the queso salmon roulade. The cream cheese wasn’t too heavy and the salmon had just the right level of saltiness. Very nice with my sangria(s). Lamb Boulette comprised meatballs in a minty pepper sauce. I reckon the combination of mint and pepper helped reduces the gaminess of the meatballs (I didn’t think it was). This was not bad, but not my favourite. I could have sat there all night eating the Venus Clams. It was a simple dish, cooked with garlic, white wine and the magic ingredient, BUTTER. Everything tastes good with butter. Really.
The Baked Portobello was meaty and lightly flavoured with some sundried tomatoes and olive oil dressing. rif enjoyed this, but I preferred the oysters and smoked salmon. Coated with breadcrumbs and deep fried till golden brown and crispy, the Fried Brie Cheese was insanely addictive. Especially with the tangy tomato jam. I shamelessly helped myself to more, and nicked some from rif’s plate too.
The Pollo Con Champinones (chicken sautéed with wild mushroom & orange aioli sauce) didn’t impress me. I found the chicken too tough and some parts were dry. If they used only chicken leg, I might have liked it better.
I like the new and improved Cava, and since I live nearby, you might just catch me there, with a couple of sangrias and if my wallet allows, juicy, luscious oysters.
Verdict: The food was quite good, and I hope it stays that way!
