Home Food Reviews Tom, Dick & Harry’s @ TTDI

Tom, Dick & Harry’s is a new pub located next to Boathouse, and it is just a few doors away from Sid’s Pub in TTDI. It is a cosy tavern reputed to have a nice selection of tap and bottled beer, and hearty pub grub. Since so many people were raving about this place, I decided to pop by and check out what they have to offer.TDH has all the trappings of a local watering hole. The beer menu and daily specials are written on huge chalkboards. Guinness is not served here, as it is a Carlsberg Malaysia outlet so expect Connor’s Stout instead. After finishing my mojito, I was served the cream of mushroom soup (RM9). This version tasted like it came from the can, but improvised with some chopped mushrooms for a better texture and deeper flavour. I like my mushroom soup thick and chunky — this was a tad watery. The crusty garlic bread was however, a good accompaniment to the soup.By the time I was done with my second cocktail, the breaded button mushrooms (RM14) arrived at our table. Fried till a nice golden brown, the mushrooms were served with a side of mayonnaise and hot mustard sauce. While the mushrooms didn’t knock my socks off, they were a good tummy filler. The hot mustard and mayo combination really hits the spot.
Pigs in a blanket are also known as biscuit dogs or “haute dogs”. They comprise pork sausages wrapped in a puff pastry, crescent roll or bacon strips. TDH’s version (RM14) needed perfecting — the pork sausage, wrapped in crispy, slightly fatty bacon lacked snap and flavour. One of my dining companions told me TDH makes the sausages in-house, so I reckon it has little or no preservatives. My dining companions and I shared a plate of deep fried pork knuckles (RM70), which was not on the menu. This was specially prepared for us for that night. TDH serves 4-5 pork knuckles (for regulars) daily, so if you want one, call them in advance. Mind you, the portion of the knuckles is so huge, you will need at least 3 people to finish this — or expect plenty of leftovers. The knuckles tasted decent, but I found the skin slightly too thick and hard. I like it crispy, light and crackly. This came with some mash potatoes, sauteed vegetables and brown gravy. The waiter carried a plate of pork platter (RM18) past me, and served it to the couple a few doors away. Feeling greedy, I ordered one to try. The platter comprised crispy bacon, pork ham and sliced sausages. Great with beer, but on its own, it was quite ordinary.Connor’s Black Pie (RM20) combines beef chunks, mushrooms and Connor Stout in hearty pie. The crust, with its distinctive crimping along the edge, was slightly tough. We asked for more mushroom sauce to rectify the problem. Luckily, the thick chunks of beef briskets braised with Guinness stout were fork tender and flavourful, producing a thick, dark and luscious sauce. They could have done better with the potato chips — it was not quite crispy on the outside.I insisted on having the deep-fried Mars bar with vanilla ice cream (RM12) for dessert, and got it my way. Presentation left much to be desired, but as the saying goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. With its crisp outer coating and gooey chocolate and caramel filling, the Mars bars were delicious. My only gripe was the tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream — there wasn’t enough to go around.Drinks were quite good, but I cannot promise it is that way all the time. See, my dining companion can be very demanding when it comes to cocktails and beers. He is afterall an alcohol blogger. He insisted on the best gin, vodka, tequila and even mixers. The mojito (RM22) and Tokyo Ice-T (RM22) hits you almost straight away, so make sure you have something to eat before that. I like creamy cocktails, so the Vodkachino (RM22), White Russian (RM22) and Ultimate Mudslide Martini (RM22) were my favourites.

All in, I liked the ambiance and drinks best. The dishes may not be fantastic, but they are gutsy and unrefined. The food took quite long to arrive, probably because it was a very full house that night. This is not the place to go to if you are in a hurry. However, this is the place to go to for properly chilled beers and cocktails that hit you straight in the head.

Ambiance: 6.5/10
Price: 5/10
Food: 5/10
Drinks: 6.5/10
Verdict: Come here and get drunk with good drinks.

Unka – They were alright, but the drinks rock!

nomad – I shared most of them! Kekeke…. =P

BBO – Lemme know what you think. ;)

Julian – Merry Christmas to you too!

Gard – Mine too.

Sonia – If you like pub grub, you'll like this.

Christine – TDH has OK drinks prices. I wouldn't say it's cheap (it's not), but the beers are very chilled and the cocktails are lethal!

J – Yup…I felt so bad eating it. >P

foodbin – So true!

leo – Waiting for your post on the place.

FoOd PaRaDiSe – Time to pay them a visit? ;)
