*photo heavy post ahead! (backdated post)
From Prague, we reached Munich in the evening and stayed with Adam in Mannheim. The next morning, we took the train (about 1 hour) to Heidelberg, a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The Universitätplatz marks the beginning of the Altstadt district, where most of Heidelberg’s historic monuments and buildings are located. It was also where the Hotel Ritter is. The Ritter is a very posh (and painfully expensive) hotel, sophisticated restaurant, and is a historical landmark in Heidelberg. The hotel is located at the west side of the city’s main sqaure, which was divided into two “squares” – the Fischmarkt (fish market) and the Marktplatz (marketplace). The Fischmarkt is no longer a fish market. It is now the trading place of many street souvenir shops in Heidelberg. The Marktplatz is a lot larger, and has many restaurants and cafés at the sidewalk. All great romantic cities have a river. Prague has the Vltava, Paris has the Seine, Florence the Arno, and for Heidelberg, it is the Neckar river.“Alte Brücke” (the old bridge) is the 2nd oldest bridge in Germany. The bridge has nine red sandstone arches, and on the arches, you can see the marked heights and dates of historic and recent floods in the Neckar Valley. We had to walk quite a distance to get to the Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberger Schloss). It is located 80m up the northern part of the Königstuhl hillside, dominating the view of the old town. By the time we reached the top, we were completely out of breath! The castle was majestic, and provided breathtaking view of the Neckar River and the City of Heidelberg. I liked walking in the castle garden, with green grass and crisp, fresh air! Beneath the courtyard of the Castle, is an exhibit of the Heidelberg Tun (Großes Fass). It is an extremely large wine vat contained within the cellars of Heidelberg Castle. The fass (German for barrel) is so big, they built massive scaffolding around it so that visitors can climb all around it.At the south end of the old bridge is the “bridge gate” (Brückentor) – an old tower of the city’s walls. The twin towers were part of medieval Heidelberg’s fortifications. I thought it was a nice way to enter the town! Food stands tend to have a magnetic pull on me, and this crepe stand was no exception. We shared a cinnamon, sugar and lemon crepe. It was no where as good as the crepes in Paris! This one tasted like floppy pancakes… o_0
We spent more than 6 hours in Heidelberg taking in the breathtaking views. Then we took a short detour to Stuttgart which was just a 30 minutes ride away. =)
