Home Food Reviews Nam Heong, Ipoh

Old Town White Coffee is one of Ipoh’s specialities along with the Ipoh Hor Fun and Nga Choi Kai (post coming up). We decided to get our dose of white coffee from Nam Heong. At 4pm, the place was crowded and many people were standing around waiting for an empty table. We got ours within 10 minutes, and five Ipoh Iced White Coffee (RM1.30) were subsequently ordered.

7.5/10

The coffee was quite fragrant, but I thought it would be better had it been more “kao”. Nonetheless, it was still pretty good.

8/10

We spotted many tables ordering the Char Kuey Teow (RM3.50 – small, RM4 – big), and decided to follow suit. Served on a banana leaf, the CKT had an intense wok hei. On top of juicy cockles and bursty prawns, the kuey teow was light, aromatic and well-flavoured.

6/10
The Chee Cheong Fun (RM3) was average. The rice sheets came topped with pickled green chilies and some scarcely scattered fried shallots. Tastewise, I thought it was nothing to shout about. The CCF from Thean Chun was better.

8/10

The egg tarts (RM1.30 each) were a delight. With a flaky pastry shell, it was delicately crumbly and melts in the mouth. The egg custard was silky smooth and not overly sweet.I heard that Nam Heong’s standard has dropped over the years. Since it was my first time there, I am in no position to comment. However, I think the egg tarts, CKT and white coffee are still worth trying.

We were there just a couple of days ago !

It has the typical over-crowded hot & humid plus smoky must-be-terribly-good quickly grab that seat ! or else ? kind of hawker/coffee shop ambience.

Then the same ( same ) realisation , actually they are all the same !

That was our feeling too
haha

only the egg tarts, CKT and white coffee are worthy of a visit.
though they’re in fact, THE origin of Old Town White Coffee outlets everywhere!
