Home Food Reviews Champ’s Bistro, Bandar Utama

*warning: This is a very NON-HALAL post

Shum and I met up with Mike for lunch at Champ’s Bistro, Bandar Utama today. Champ’s Bistro is owned by Richard Nah, who is also the restaurant’s head chef. We were lucky he was at the restaurant when we popped by, as he prepared our dishes. One look at the menu and I already knew what I was going to have – the Chee Yuk Fun (pork noodles) set. Shum opted for the Chow Siew Yuk & Rice set. The lunch sets cost RM13.90 and comes with bottomless ice lemon tea/soya bean. Mike didn’t go for the lunch set; he had the Penang Loh Mee.The ice lemon tea was slightly more diluted than I like mine to be. However, it had just the right amount of sugar making it a great thirst quencher. My dish was seriously a bowl of pork fest! The portion was ample, but what blew me away was the crazy amount of pork in it – PORK LARD, minced pork, pork liver and intestines in thick, murky pork broth. It was the nicest, most wholesome bowl of pork noodles I’ve eaten so far (no kidding!).The lard was superbly crunchy and melts in the mouth, even after soaking in broth. The minced pork was juicy and the broth….oh my gawd! I have no idea how long it takes to make the broth, but one can taste the sweetness and rich porky flavour in every spoonful. Now repeat after me…“oink oink oink!”Mei Shum’s chow siew yuk & rice was quite tasty and a hearty portion too. The tender roast pork was stir-fried with dark, sticky soy sauce and emitted the loveliest “wok hei” flavour. I stole a piece from Shum and it was yummy; slightly charred and the meat was tender with crispy edges. Mei Shum wished there were more fats on the pork, as some parts were quite lean. The dish would have been even nicer had there been some gravy on the rice.Mike’s Loh Mee was really tasty. With thick, savoury broth, the noodles came with fish slices, big juicy prawns, squid, liver, vegetables, an egg and plenty of pork lard. One sip was enough to taste how rich their soup stock is. Thickened with egg, not starch, the noodles had a good, firm bite. Mike asked me to eat half of his pork lard, to which I happily nodded and proceeded to scoop the delightful morsels onto my spoon and into my mouth. :DWhen Richard saw how much I enjoyed the pork noodles and extra lard from Mike, he specially made for me a bowl of “Damm Shiok Lard Special”. It’s basically crunchy lard pieces with loads of chopped chilli padi and onions in sweet black sauce (and maybe a squeeze of lime?). Tres tres yum! The crispy lard went “pok pok” in my mouth before fizzling away with the sweet, tangy onion slices and chopped chilli padi. Shiok-ness!!* rif, I DID NOT FINISH THE WHOLE BOWL OF LARD. Mei Shum and Mike had ONE PIECE EACH. lalalala… :D

All in, the bill came up to RM57 inclusive of tax and service charge for the 3 of us. Considering the generous portions and good food quality, the price was well justified. Mike’s dish had fresh seafood AND pork. Every spoon of my noodles oozed porky goodness. I find Champ’s better value for money than Madam Kwan. (Mei Shum: Definitely!)
Ambiance: 7/10
Price: 6.5/10
Food: 8.5/10 (very very non-halal)
Service: Superb. The “tauke” served us personally. 8)
Verdict: Two words: DAMN SHIOK. Go try it for yourself!

Champs is one of our favourite places for porky food, hehe! You must try their famous signature Prawn Mee… with huge chunks of pork ribs in it :)
